The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is one of the best roads in Maharashtra. It's also one of the busiest on a holiday weekend. A little planning makes the difference between a smooth ride and three hours of crawling.

The route in plain words
From Mumbai you join the expressway near Kalamboli/Panvel, pass Khalapur, climb through the Khandala ghat section, go past Lonavala and then head down towards Pune. The whole road is about 150 km.
How long does it take?
On a quiet weekday morning, around 2.5 to 3 hours. On a Friday evening or the start of a long weekend, plan for 4 hours or more. Rain in the ghats slows traffic as well.
Toll
Cars pay toll on the expressway, and the amount is revised from time to time. Rather than quoting an old number here, ask your cab company whether toll is included in your fare. At Samruddhi Cabs we tell you upfront.
Best time to leave
-
Weekdays: leave Mumbai before 7 am or after 10 am.
-
Fridays: leave early, or after 9 pm if you can.
-
Sundays: the Pune-to-Mumbai return is the heavy direction in the evening.
Small things that help
-
Tell the driver if you get motion sick. The ghat section has plenty of curves.
-
Keep a bottle of water and a phone charger handy.
-
If you're catching a flight, add a buffer. We cover that in our Pune to Mumbai airport cab guide.
